Steering the Future of Oceanographic and Polar Research
Argo has developed solid expertise in the management of research vessels, collaborating with numerous Italian and international universities and marine research institutes. The company coordinates ships engaged in oceanographic and applied geophysical campaigns, including those in Arctic polar waters.
In partnership with the public agency ENEA (National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development), Argo successfully managed 23 research campaigns aboard the MV Italica, a versatile vessel specialized for operations in extreme environments. The MV Italica played a crucial role in providing logistical and scientific support for the National Antarctic Research Program (PNRA). During these missions, the MV Italica regularly reached the Italian “Mario Zucchelli” Station in Terra Nova Bay, Ross Sea, facing severe weather conditions and perennial ice.
An important milestone in Argo’s history was the achievement of the first “Polar Ship” certification ever awarded to an Italian vessel: the RV Laura Bassi, owned by OGS. This certification is a specific recognition granted to vessels qualified to operate in extremely challenging environments such as the Arctic and Antarctic.
The RV Laura Bassi, the first and only ship flying the Italian flag to receive this certification, provides scientific and logistical support for Italian polar missions while also contributing to oceanographic and geophysical research within the national and European scientific community, as well as globally, with a particular focus on polar regions.
Alongside the RV OGS Explora, the Laura Bassi has participated in numerous polar missions that have enabled the exploration of remote and little-known areas, providing valuable information for the international scientific community and supporting studies on global warming, ocean currents, marine ecosystems, and glaciological dynamics.
